GROW YOUR BUSINESS WITH STRATEGIES THAT BUILD HIGH PERFORMING, SAFE AND MANAGEABLE TEAMS

We see so many different types of people in everyday interactions from where we buy our coffee, to the person that passes us on the street, to the person in our recruitment process.

It is inevitable to form some level of judgment of a person on first impression. We are only human! You might absolutely fall in love with the person and consider them the "dream" or you might step back and think how could I even invite this person for interview?!!

Too young, too old, too much experience, not enough experience, looks good, looks bad, has tattoos, piercings, goes out too much, doesn't work late enough so probably is not motivated......

The assumptions are endless. Some work out correct, and some don't. There is no real formula or science to it.

Unfortunately though the main reason some of these biases make it into the initial screening is when businesses have been burnt by poor hiring decisions in the past and the individual had one of those characteristics.

But the real truth is, the above reasons are NOT why someone does not perform.

I've seen people who seem like they never work, they're always out, miss important events but their results are absolutely BOOMING once you really look at the real person. I've seen people with tattoos and piercings in board shorts do an absolutely amazing job, and I've seen the same do an absolute terrible job!!

I've also seen people who absolutely impressed everyone, dressed the sharpest of them all, with MBA's from some of the best universities in the world, create the most incredible, horrifying destructive outcomes for businesses.

You need a system that cuts through the social veneer and sees WHO is truly behind the mask.

Have you ever been frustrated by how someone treated you, how you were served, how your problem was not solved? Did you sometimes want to make a purchase but the salesperson was most unhelpful? Were you involved in a car accident or malfunction?

In nearly all situations, our every mishap and poor life experience starts with a bad hiring decision that someone made somewhere. From bad customer service to air crash investigations, every situation that is taking up your attention, has to do with a person.

And now, you have to pay the price because someone didn't do their job - even though you had nothing to do with the hiring decision

The Real Cost of a Bad Hiring

It's more than you may have considered.
  • Direct hiring and recruitment costs, $5-$100K+
  • Lost time invested in training, upwards of $10K.
  • Executive time wasted in training $20K- $500K+.
  • Lost opportunity cost. $200K++++
  • Wages $30K - millions.
  • Lost customers - hundreds to millions.
  • Stress, lost sleep, slowed down growth.
  • Good staff leaving.

How can you PROTECT your team from bad hiring decisions?

Every successful and growing business has a hiring system in place. They don't go on gut feel alone and they look for proven systems to help them. They understand that the only way to build their company is to have good people.

It does not matter if you are a large corporation or have a few people on your team. This becomes particularly important in small-medium businesses that don't have the cash-flow to afford hiring mistakes.

Your business is not a testing ground and the costs are far too high and damaging. When you have the right people, everything works, flows, and becomes very easy.

Help others be SAFE, STABLE andPRODUCTIVE

Next time you have a less than ideal experience, help that business start their journey towards better hiring decisions, more often by inviting them to complete a Free Test Drive of the Performia Evaluation.

Marla Tabaka recently wrote in Inc.Wire,

The longer I work with entrepreneurs, the more certain I am that the ability to succeed isn't strictly dictated by skill, creativity and intellect. Things like integrity and personal behaviour are at least as important as education and experience. “

In support of that statement, she spoke of the habits that should be avoided at all costs..

  • You frequently use the words "I don't have time right now."
  • You let your mind drift when others are talking.
  • You ignore advice and ideas without consideration.
  • You believe that to get something done right you have to do it yourself.

As an entrepreneur, it’s not surprizing if these habits are part of your “being” but it’s also vital to recognise them, tame them and eliminate them.

Often it’s a case that you’ve so caught up IN the business that you have no time left to work ON the business.

If that sounds like you, then it’s time to talk to Performia about MISSION Hiring.

We can show you the path to growth beyond your expectations with a highly productive, very cost effective but normally unattainable General Manager for your business.

Release yourself from those habits that restrict your growth potential and focus on your Vision while the GM handles the Mission!

The Australian economy would be $70 billion better off if Australian firms closed the productivity gap through better management, a report by Deloitte Access Economics found - this was reported in The Australian last week.

The report, commissioned by Westpac, found Australia is 23 per cent less productive than the US and a halving of that gap would raise gross domestic product by 4.33 per cent. That equates to an extra $3000 per person.  David Lindberg, chief executive of Westpac’s Business Bank, said “The future of our economy has a lot to do with the success of our businesses and when businesses prosper we all prosper.”

Good statement!

When looking at better management, the referenced article was suggesting training and mentoring the business owners as a way to improve management.  However, when we look at the founders and entrepreneurs of small and medium sized businesses, we most often see visionaries, dreamers and go-getters who don’t necessarily want to be the manager of the business.

So if you are a small business owner, what should you do?

The above article highlights two areas of discussion for me…

1] The need for better productivity and

2] The need for better management

There’s no doubt that improving the productivity of an organisation improves the bottom line. But it’s more than just systems, procedures and automation. It’s also about the people and starting with Productive people is one of the most efficient ways to improve the bottom line.

1] When you employ new people, ensure you only get productive people and that means making sure they have a clear and verifiable/provable history of adding real value in previous employment. At the same time, weed out those who are causing problems for the business.

2] Rather than trying to be the manager, when you really prefer to be the visionary who provides the drive and passion, you should hire a General Manager who will take control of the core of the business and implement all the productivity improvements - both people and systems.

Theses two actions will really help your business to Take Off and break through to the next level.

With only a few more weeks to go to the end of 2012, the pressure is on to complete as much as possible before some of us break away for a rewarding holiday, whilst others continue to work hard and kick more goals.

One of these pressures is regarding your hiring for the new year and the best time to start looking. I know of clients who are actively hiring now to ensure they’re well prepared for the mid January start whilst others who are considering waiting until the new year to resume their hiring.

The challenge this creates is leaving sufficient time to hire the right team member from a thorough selection process, not desperation, whilst also ensuring you have access to a wide selection of candidates.

One question to ask yourself is how long would it take for you to have an established and productive team member ready to start?

The process for a successful hiring includes:
- Research & thorough fact finding for the role, ( 2 days)
- Creation of Ads and advertising, ( 3 days and ongoing )
- Screening (Pre-assessment) of all candidates, ( 7 days and ongoing )
- Shortlisting candidates and final interviews, ( 2 days and ongoing )
- Reference Checks, ( 1 day and ongoing )
- Employment offer and candidate starting, ( 2 – 30 days )

All of this can take anywhere from a week to 30 days from the initial start through to hiring the right person and the success and length of the process relies heavily on your process, speed and efficiency, as well as the position you’re hiring for.

When are candidates looking?
We’ve also found that there are high calibre candidates looking for their next project, challenge, or stable opportunity at this time of the year. For reasons including:

- End of contract or project,
- Well organised departure plans ready for fresh start in the new year.

Candidates looking include those who prefer to complete their employment in an ethical way that leaves their current company in a good situation and creates a smooth transition for the next person, whilst allowing them to start in a fresh new role with your company. These are the candidates you want to have access to before they take on other opportunities.

Productive candidates do not stay on the market for long, if at all. You need to have the system to identify these candidates amongst your list of resumes and screen IN the productive and fit to the role, and screen OUT those who do not fit. Performia has the system to help you with exactly this.

This makes it important for your recruitment division to always have your ‘feelers’ out, regardless of when ‘exactly’ you need the person to start, as you can work out the starting time with the right person, but do not compromise on quality as it’s better to have no one, than the wrong person.

Check out this great video at http://gateway.performia.asia/ and see how Performia can help you screen IN the right, and screen OUT the wrong candidates.

If you are currently hiring or ready to start this process now, call Liam on 03 9001 0267 to discover our Christmas special and gift to you.

As always I value your feedback and look forward to sharing your success that will follow.
